Punu tribe reside beside the Ogowe River Basin Southern Gabon. The Punu women are renowned for there beauty. 28cm height 17cm width 8cm depth Traditionally carvers were usually men that couldn't be either Warriors or Farmers. Children with deformities were thought to possess magical powers and the masks were believed to hold this magic. Masks were used in festival dances, the men would wear the masks to connect with their ancestors and become possessed by the spirits. The masks were also used for protection for the community and they hung them in their homes where the masks would smell of the smoke used at the rituals and also to appease natures spirits for good harvests, river spirits for good fishing. The artefacts are revered as sacred. They also used Statue Carvings which were used in fertility rites and were left in near the door for protection against evil spirits. Dating these objects is difficult as the masks are passed down through generations.
