The Pende "Malade" mask, also known as the Mbangu mask, from the Democratic Republic of Congo represents illness caused by deviant behaviour or spirits. These masks, created by the Pende people, are characterised by distorted facial features like a crooked mouth and nose, and often have features like asymmetrical eyes and a split half white “kaolin” and half red “ochre” face, all designed to emphasise proper social conduct and ward off illness. The masks are used in masquerades to both threaten those who misbehave and to promote healing for those who are sick.
