The Dhyāngro is a traditional double headed frame drum used by shamans (known locally as Jhakri or Dhami) for ritual, healing, and spiritual journeys in the Himalayan region. These drums are essential in inducing the trance like state necessary for the shaman to connect with the spiritual world.
It has a cylindrical body made of bent wood, with an animal hide stretched over each side, secured by a hoop and intricate lacing.
The drum features a wooden handle typically carved to resemble a Purba (a ritual dagger), often incorporating carved faces that may represent deities.
The double headed design is sometimes interpreted as representing male and female aspects.
A metal chain is attached to the drum, enabling it to be hung up.
Inside the drum, it contains loose objects that produce sound when shaken.
