The statue
The Buddha sits in the lotus position on a raised throne decorated with a band of lotus petals. His right hand is raised in blessing, while his left rests in his lap. His robe is draped over his left shoulder, with a finely engraved border running along its edge.
He has the traditional marks of an enlightened being: tightly curled hair rising to the ushnisha (the crown of wisdom), long earlobes and a serene, downcast gaze.
The two-tone finish gives the statue real warmth. The robe and base have a rich, copper-brown patina, while the face, chest and raised hand are polished to a bright gold, so the eye is drawn straight to his expression and gesture.
Made by hand
Statues like this are made in Nepal using the centuries-old lost-wax method. A wax model is sculpted by hand and coated in clay, then heated so the wax melts away. Molten brass is poured into the hollow mould left behind, and once cool, each piece is finished, engraved and polished by hand.
At 20cm tall, it’s a good size for a desk, bookshelf, mantelpiece or small meditation space, and makes a meaningful gift.
As with all our hand-cast pieces, natural variations in the casting and finish are part of each statue’s character. Dimensions and weight are approximate.
