Who is Green Tara?
Tara is a female Buddha, and her green form is often called the “Buddha of enlightened activity”, because she is believed to actively carry out the compassionate work of all the Buddhas. Devotees pray to her for protection from fear and danger, for help overcoming obstacles, and for the fulfilment of wishes. Her name is linked to green because she is traditionally painted in that colour, which represents activity and energy.
The statue
Green Tara is shown in her traditional pose, full of meaning:
Seated with one leg extended: her left leg is folded in meditation, while her right leg reaches forward, showing she is ready to step out into the world to help those in need.
Right hand: lowered, with the palm facing outwards in the gesture of generosity, granting blessings and wishes.
Left hand: raised at her heart in the gesture of refuge and protection.
Lotus flowers: blue lotuses (utpala) bloom at each shoulder, symbols of purity and compassion.
She wears an ornate five-pointed crown and is adorned with finely detailed necklaces, armlets, bracelets and anklets. The finish is particularly lovely, with a rich copper-brown body and her face, hands and jewellery highlighted in polished gold.
Made by hand
This statue was made in Nepal using the traditional lost-wax casting method. A wax model is sculpted by hand and coated in clay, then heated so the wax melts away. Molten brass is poured into the hollow mould, and once cool, the statue is finished, engraved and polished by hand.
Whether for a home shrine, a meditation space or a collection, she’s a striking and meaningful piece.
