Hand-Carved Wooden “Orang Malu” Shy Man Yogi Figure, Suar Wood, Indonesia

£23.00

A hand-carved yogi figure from Indonesia, known as Orang Malu, meaning “shy man” or “embarrassed person”. He sits curled up tightly, with his head bowed down onto his knees and his arms wrapped around himself, as if hiding away from the world.

The legend

These little figures are also known as “worry men”. Legend has it that by touching or stroking his back, you pass your worries on to him, so he can carry them for you. Whether or not you believe it, he’s a gentle reminder to pause, breathe and let go of stress, and he tends to make people smile.

Made by hand

He’s carved from a single piece of suar wood, also known as monkey pod or rain tree, by local Indonesian woodcarvers. Suar has a warm golden-brown colour and a rich, swirling grain, which the smooth, rounded carving shows off beautifully. No two figures are quite the same.

He’s a lovely piece for a desk, bookshelf or meditation space, and a fun, thoughtful gift for anyone who needs to worry a little less.
