Small Hand-Carved Wooden Medicine Buddha with Halo, India, 11cm
TA small hand-carved wooden statue of the Medicine Buddha from India, seated in meditation on a lotus base, with a rayed halo framing his head.
Known in Sanskrit as Bhaisajyaguru, the Medicine Buddha is the Buddha of healing. He is revered in Buddhist tradition as a source of physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing, and his image is often kept as a focus for meditation and prayers for good health.
Here he holds a bowl in his lap, a symbol of the healing nectar he offers to all beings, and his right hand is raised in blessing. His robe falls in deep, carefully carved folds, and his face is calm and gently smiling, with tightly curled hair rising to the ushnisha (the crown of wisdom) and the long earlobes traditionally shown on images of the Buddha.
At 11cm tall, it’s a lovely size for a small shrine, bookshelf, desk or windowsill, and makes a thoughtful gift.
Date: Early 21st century
Geography: India
Dimensions: 11cm H x 6.5cm W x 3.5cm D
Weight: 62g
