A small hand-carved wooden Buddha head from India, with a calm, meditative expression. Despite its size, it’s carved with real care: rows of tightly curled hair rise to the ushnisha, the rounded crown on top of the Buddha’s head that symbolises wisdom and enlightenment.
His eyes are half closed in meditation, and his long earlobes are cut away from the head, a traditional sign of the Buddha’s renunciation of his former life as a prince, when he wore heavy royal earrings. The head rests on a base carved with a crosshatched pattern.
At just 5.5cm tall, it’s ideal for a small shrine, desk, windowsill or bedside table, and makes a lovely stocking filler or small gift.
